JEFF Bezos is the richest man in the world and is likely to get even richer over the coming years.

The Amazon founder continues to make more and more money even as the US economy struggles during the coronavirus pandemic.

Who are the richest people in the world?

Forbes reported in March that Bezos is the  wealthiest man in the world, and it appears he will retain that title indefinitely.

He is followed by Microsoft founder Bill Gates ($98billion) and French businessman Bernard Arnault ($76billion)

Finance maven Warren Buffett ($67.5billion) and software magnate Larry Ellison ($59billion) round out the top five.

Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg is seventh on the list with $55billion.

Bezos made the Forbes' famous list of 400 wealthiest Americans all the way back in 1998 – four years after he launched Amazon.

The money continues to flow in even though he gave up millions to his wife in a divorce settlement last year.

And complaints from Amazon employees continue to pour in as well about how they have been treated during the pandemic.

An Amazon worker claims she was fired in seconds after being "silenced" for raising coronavirus concerns and safety issues.

Lawmakers have called on Bezos to appear before Congress to respond to serious allegations made over the last few months.

Is Jeff Bezos a trillionaire?

No, but it could come to pass within several years.

Bezos had a net worth of $113billion in March, according to Forbes, and the outlet reports that number has already soared to $145billion.

The software-review site Comparisun believes that Bezos could become the world's first trillionaire within about six years.

"Despite losing an estimated $38 billion as part of his recent divorce, Jeff Bezos is still by far the world's richest person and his net worth has grown by 34 percent on average over the last five years, which could potentially see him become the world's first trillionaire as early as 2026," the report reads.

The revelation that Bezos could become a trillionaire was not received well by many Americans suffering through the pandemic.

"Jeff Bezos is about to become the world's first trillionaire while we're about to enter a depression," one Twitter user wrote.

Another person wrote that Bezos "is about to become the world's first trillionaire at a time where more than two hundred million people around the world have lost their jobs in the last two months.

"And many cannot put food on the table.

"Humanity sure managed to f*** things up somewhere along the way."

Another tweeted: "So let me get this straight, people are mad at #JeffBezos because WE the consumer continue to buy his product. Yes that's smart."

Comparisun predicts that 11 people have a realistic chance to become trillionaires during their lifetimes.

They include Bezos, Arnault, Zuckerberg, former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, Michael Dell of Dell Technologies and software engineer Sergey Brin.

Zuckerberg could gain trillionaire status at a younger age than anyone else.

The 36-year-old Facebook CEO could reach the milestone within 15 years, predicted Comparisun.
