THE Internal Revenue Service has asked certain Americans who have received stimulus checks to send their payments back.

Although most Americans getting a $1,200 check won't need to send the money back, the agency mistakenly sent thousands of foreign workers living overseas and deceased people checks in mid-April.

The IRS confirmed the mistaken payments to undocumented immigrants, incarcerated people and dead tax payers earlier this month, according to Business Insider.

On May 6, the IRS clarified its policy regarding Economic Impact Payments on its FAQ page to state that dead people aren't eligible for the money.

The agency is now asking those recipients or their family members to give back the funds.

"A Payment made to someone who died before receipt of the Payment should be returned to the IRS following the instructions in the Q&A about repayments," the policy states.

"Return the entire Payment unless the Payment was made to joint filers and one spouse had not died before receipt of the Payment, in which case, you only need to return the portion of the Payment made on account of the decedent."

If the IRS says you're ineligible for a stimulus check but you or someone in your family received one anyway, the agency expects you to return it.

Undocumented immigrants are ineligible for the payment because the IRS considers them as aliens.

It's unclear how many widows and other family members of the deceased are in this situation.

In the first four weeks of the economic relief program, the IRS sent out 130 million payments and expects to send about 150 million checks overall, according to Money.
