FIVE experienced surfers have died and another is missing after stormy weather created an "avalanche-like" wave of sea foam off a popular Dutch beach.

Dutch authorities said the group of six surfers jumped into the sea late on Monday at Scheveningen beach in The Hague and were later reported missing.

It is thought the surfers could not deal with the combination of heavy weather, northerly winds and swells that hit the Dutch coast.

An additional problem was an excessively thick layer of foam that drifted on the North Sea waters by the beaches.

Officials and witnesses told Agence France-Presse the conditions created "avalanche-like" sea foam along the coast.

The Dutch Cost Guard said two of three people who were rescued on Tuesday, were later pronounced dead.

Two additional bodies were found on Tuesday morning and a fifth body was seen floating in the waters as it was drifting out of reach.

The last surfer in the group remains unaccounted for.

"When a group of people went surfing early in the evening, no one expected that some would not come home," said The Hague Mayor Johan Remkes in a statement.

He said it is still too early to say exactly what the cause of the tragedy was, especially as the surfers had plenty of experience to assess the dangers of the waters.

The victims were aged between 22 and 38 and they all lived nearby.

Pat Smith, The Hague's "alternative mayor" told Den Haag FM radio station that two of the surfers were internationally trained lifeguards who had worked in Australia.

He added that they were "busy training" when they "disappeared under the foam like it was some sort of avalanche."

A photographer told MSW this morning: "Huge drama, the surf community is in total shock and disbelief.

"The community is hurt, no one dares to go near the water with a board this morning, even though the swell is on."
