Six people have been arrested following the robbery of the 41-year-old, who was waiting outside a supermarket when set on by the gang at around 1pm.

The shocking video shows one of the yobs pouncing on the innocent man before holding him by the neck and dragging him to the ground.

The rest of the gang then hurls abuse at him as they kick him and pull his hair, while one reaches into his pockets to take his phone.

A young woman appears to be the ring leader – kicking the victim as he lies helpless on the ground and then spitting in his face.

The yobs then quickly disappear, leaving the poor man lying helpless in the middle of the street.

'SCUMBAGS'

GMB host Piers Morgan instantly condemned the attack, tweeting the video alongside the caption: "Snivelling cowardly scumbags. Let's catch them."

The clip quickly went viral on social media with people disgusted at the gang's actions.

One wrote: "I hope the victim can recover in time, and that he has sufficient support. What a dismal, wretched place this world can be."

Another added: "Physically feel sick to my stomach watching that – my heart breaks for that poor young man having to endure a shocking attack & robbery like that!"

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police confirmed that six arrests had been made but investigations are ongoing.

They said: "Police investigating a robbery in Barnsley town centre on Friday (8 May) have made six arrests so far.

"Shortly after 1pm on VE Day, it's understood that a 41-year-old man was walking down an alleyway when he was attacked by eight others.

"The man was reportedly hit in the face and pulled to the ground before his mobile phone and a packet of cigarettes were stolen.

"Five men, aged 34, 28, 25, 27 and 19, and a 21 year old female have all been released under investigation as enquiries continue."

A GoFundMe page has also been set up to try and raise money for the victim by locals.

The page has smashed its fundraising target of £500 to raise a whopping £2,775.

South Yorkshire Police are asking anyone with any information regarding the incident to contact 101, while the investigation number is 14/72599/20.
